If This is Your Lawyer, I wish you Luck

amalAmal Alamuddin, British-Lebanese Lawyer and fiance of actor George Clooney clearly is one of those lawyers who doesn’t care much about the facts.  In a statement in which she turned down the offer to sit on the UN’s Gaza-probe panel, Alamuddin made the following statement:

“I am horrified by the situation in the occupied Gaza Strip, particularly the civilian casualties and strongly believe that there should be an independent investigation and accountability for crimes that have been committed.”

She turned down the offer citing other commitments and 8 ongoing cases.

If by occupied she means occupied by Hamas and crimes committed by Hamas, I commend her.  However, since I know better, and since this committee was set up to investigate Israel, I’ll say this.  If Alamuddin is your lawyer, representing you in one of those 8 ongoing cases, good luck.  Knowing the facts and speaking the truth publicly don’t seem to matter to her, and as a client that would concern me.  To call it the “occupied Gaza Strip” should pretty much close the case in favor of Israel, since these alleged crimes are based on activities allegedly committed by a non-occupying force.  Since this is more of a witch hunt than an investigation I am sure the facts will not matter, but if Alamuddin was my lawyer, I’d be nervous.

One other point I want to make.  If you plan on criticizing me for attacking Alamuddin’s credibility as a lawyer, that’s fine, I can take it. But never expect me to feel bad about it when she is making statements that are incorrect and accusatory regarding the State of Israel.

And George Clooney doesn’t scare me.  He’s not Batman.

Dear Anti-Semite

jewish_starDear Anti-Semite,

I have spent a lifetime trying to find out what makes you tick, and now that I believe I have discovered what it is I wanted to address you directly, intelligently, and with a basic respect for mankind.

What you may or may not know, is that we, meaning me and many of my fellow Jews, do care enough to want to know what are the root causes of your hatred for us. We may take an indignant approach to you the individual, but I am sure you can understand that.  No one feels warmth towards someone who hates them.

Let me start by being very clear about something.  If you verbally declare that you do not dislike Jews, even if some of your actions may hint otherwise, I am not addressing you, because if you feel in your heart that you do not want harm to come to the Jewish people as a whole, you may not be my friend, but you are also not the problem.  This letter is for those who come right out and say, ” I don’t like” or “I hate the Jews”.

I recognize that there are two types of anti-Semites.  The ones who are born into it and the ones who made that choice later in life.  Although every human being has the freedom to think as they like, those born into it, for example, Palestinian children and young adults in Gaza, haven’t been given much of a choice. The understanding of Jews being evil and the need to get rid of them is all they’ve been taught.  No one questions what makes them hate Jews.  They don’t know any other way.  What makes it even more difficult is that they only know information provided to them and therefore the chances of them changing how they feel is next to impossible without being exposed to an alternate way of thinking and an open and honest exchange of information.

In many ways this letter is directed to those of you in the second category, the ones that came to the conclusion on their own to hate Jews and despite a strong negative influence, live in free societies where forming different opinions is allowed and in some places even encouraged.  So the question is, why do you hate me when you don’t even know me?

Well the truth is, and I hope you are willing to admit this, it wouldn’t matter if you did know me.  You’ve made a choice to hate me because of what I am, not who I am.  I stopped to consider the fact that it is because you believe we killed Jesus, but let’s be honest again.  That argument is full of holes.  I know many people, Catholics, Christians, etc., that have devoted their life to their following of Jesus and do not hate Jews at all. In many cases they love us. Even those who believe we killed their Lord, if they are genuine about God’s teachings will not find it possible to hate their fellow-man.  So in the case of those who call that the reason, I also maintain it’s not the reason they hate us, it’s the justification they use for their hate.

You can say we’re cheap, arrogant, obnoxious, etc., and although I don’t deny that there are those among us who are all of those things, if you look at it honestly you’ll admit that we don’t have the corner on any of those negative stereotypes.  Every group has plenty of people who are cheap, arrogant or obnoxious.  Even whatever group you belong to has people in those categories.

Since I started by saying I have the answer, here it is.  It comes down to two issues.  First of all, when people are not satisfied entirely with how their life is going they try to find someone to blame.  That’s not news.  We all know that. But why are the Jews so often the choice?  Well it’s because despite the fact that we come from everywhere, can look the same as everyone else, be White, Black, Asian, African, European, have blonde hair, black hair, red hair, be short or be tall, we always choose to distinguish ourselves as Jewish. Ironically the biggest complaint Jewish religious leaders have of other Jews is the fact that they assimilate.  I am here to tell you that I realize that one of the reasons you hate me is because despite my physical appearance allowing me to hide what I am, I choose to be proud of what I am.  That infuriates you because you interpret it as though I am saying that I am better than you, even if it is not what I intend to be saying.  As a group we are unapologetically proud of our history and culture.  That makes you angry and makes us easier to identify and a much easier target.

The second reason, and the one that I think is the primary one, is our durability.  Despite massacres, persecutions, wars, a Holocaust, and countless attempts to rid the world of us, we’re still here.  That does two things.  For the more ignorant it frightens you.  It will be used it to justify some of the most bizarre accusations one people has ever had to endure.  Human blood in Matzah, demonic partners with Satan, etc. After all, something has to be keeping this indestructible people on the planet.  The Chosen People thing certainly doesn’t work for you.  We must have made a deal with the devil to stick around as long as we have.  I would actually say that if you do believe in the devil, it is the devil making you hate us, not the devil working with us.  But that thought process requires a paradigm shift of enormous proportions so subsequently I do not hold out hope that you will see it that way.  I just want to propose that theory to you if you believe the Devil is involved.  After all, the Devil would try to stop you from supporting a people whose contribution to medicine, technology and culture is so significant that I am fairly positive you reading this has gained some benefit from it as well.

The other thing it does is motivate the power-hungry manipulator of the masses.  Someone trying to rally people behind hate sees the elimination of the Jews as the ultimate challenge, believing that they will be the person that finally wiped these people off the planet.  They present it as though our very presence is a challenge to everything good they are trying to create, even if what they are trying to create is self-serving and evil.  These pariahs that just won’t go away are going to finally be destroyed by that powerful leader taking you, the poor, disadvantaged, disenfranchised citizen to the promised land.  It sounds so good, why not kill Jews to get there.

My advice to you is to take heed of this reasoning because if you stop and think about it, you’d be much wiser taking this information and using it to alter your mindset.  History shows not only that we do not go away, but those who tried to get rid of us failed miserably in the end.  Hitler was very successful in killing a lot of Jews, but he ultimately failed in getting rid of Jewish people, and his obsession with doing so contributed to his defeat in the end.  I know that by saying that I am indicating that I believe God is on our side, something that makes you hate me even more, but here’s a better suggestion.  Either pick a winner and support us, or trust God to pick whatever side is the right side, regardless of your choice it results in a lot less hate in your heart.  I assure you in the end you’ll be happier for it.

Sincerely,

David Groen

Remembering Robin Williams. One of the funniest ever

Hope you all enjoy these 2 video clips I found from Mork & Mindy.
“I don’t know how much value I had in this universe, but I do know I made a few people happier than they would’ve been without me. As long as I know that, I’m as rich as I ever need to be.”
These words were spoken by the character Mork played by the late great Robin Williams in the TV show Mork & Mindy. He made a lot of people happier than they would’ve been without him, and I was one of them.

UNacceptable as usual

UNHRC OHCHR_CIWhile people are literally getting beheaded and buried alive in Iraq, and a terrorist organization makes no attempt to hide its intentions, the United Nations Human Rights Council has decided to spend its time, and I am guessing Qatari money, on establishing a totally biased committee to investigate what they so happily refer to as Israeli War Crimes.  The United Nations is, for lack of a better term, hiding in plain sight.  They have been given so much free rein to act with impunity that it is a disgrace to modern-day civilization.  Their concern is not with right and wrong, it is with pushing an agenda, one that is clearly anti-Israel.  When will the world take measures to stop this corrupt group of people using funds  on biased witch hunts instead of on helping nations and people truly in need?  As of now there is no sign it will be any time soon.

The Egypt Factor

ancient-egypt-pyramids-wallpaperA few weeks back I started writing a piece titled: ” Does civilization’s future rest in its cradle?”  This title was based on the theory that the best hope at stopping the growth of Islamic fanaticism would possibly be Egypt’s ability to reassert itself in the region and use power and influence to mobilize forces against Islamic extremism.  I never finished that article and changed the title because there are a lot more factors to consider.

Egypt’s involvement in cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas is certainly a good thing.  It represents a legitimate desire for peace and stability in the region, something Egypt has learned the benefit of over the years.  Also, as opposed to when the Muslim Brotherhood was sitting in power in Cairo, this is a government not aligned with Hamas and one that is just as opposed to lifting the critical Naval blockade of Gaza as Israel is, at least as long as Hamas is in power.  Egypt’s current government, which seems to represent a large portion of its population, is very strongly opposed to the Islamic extremism sweeping across parts of the region.  Together with Israel, the nation most threatened by the extremists, Egypt is determined to see a more moderate Middle East.

The concern here is the potential power this gives Egypt, specifically over Israel.  The Israeli government finds itself in a situation in which it must be aware of Egypt’s standing in the region and on the global stage.  Prime Minister Netanyahu will of course continue to make decisions that first and foremost address Israel’s best interests and security, but he is also aware that a strong and credible Egypt not only helps Israel, but contributes to the stability of the entire region. If presented with a questionable proposal, but one that allows Egypt to broker a peace deal, Israel may find itself between a rock and a hard place.  On one side any deal that represents compromise may hurt Israel, but on the other hand undermining Egypt’s attempt to assert itself will hurt Israel, not only in the short-term but in the long-term as well.  It’s a very delicate diplomatic situation and one to be watched closely.

The Nuclear Scenario

Nuclear_bombIt’s the topic we don’t often bring up, but it’s always somewhere in our minds.  With all that is happening in the world one might think it is just a matter of time till we see the use of some form of a nuclear weapon.  It’s a terrifying thought and quite frankly one that makes no normal person happy, regardless of where it would be used.  We can choose to ignore the subject, a decision I would understand because of how frightening it is to imagine, but what I am going to do in this piece is break down the numerous scenarios in which it could happen.

I’ll start with the 5 countries that are members of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. They are the United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France and China.  I believe the least likely of the  to be presented with an option in which to go nuclear is China.  Of the remaining 4, only Russia finds itself in a conflict close to home, but the fact that it is so close to home is the very reason not to use it.  The concerning thing about Russia has always been that after the break up of the Soviet Union there was a concern that weapons were scattered in various locations. That fear has dissipated somewhat with the control Vladimir Putin seems to have over the area, but that being said, Russia is the country on the list I see as most susceptible to terrorist infiltration.  The remaining three are all facing the potential threats of terrorist attacks by Islamic terrorists and should an attack be serious enough and the source identifiable, one can’t take a nuclear response off the table.  That is something all would be reluctant to do unless the attack on them was nuclear, and even then it would be uncertain.

There are four other countries that are nuclear powers, three declared and not members of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and one which is not a declared nuclear power but widely known as being one. There are more scenarios here and they are all quite terrifying. The first two, India and Pakistan, are the ones that might be seen as most likely to use  a nuclear weapon on the other.  Although the tensions between the two have calmed somewhat over the years, these 2 countries still don’t like each other and have very different global interests.  I believe India would only consider doing so if forced into it  and I believe Pakistan under its current leadership would not use it.  But this is where it gets interesting.  The Taliban has a significant presence in Pakistan and with neighboring Afghanistan still unstable and dealing with its strong Taliban force, no one wants to even think about what would happen should Pakistan’s government be replaced with a government aligned with Islamic extremists, or even worse a Taliban government.  That would without doubt be a global game changer.

There are 2 countries left to speak of, one of which is the one undeclared nuclear power, Israel.  Israel, like the nations in the Non-Proliferation Treaty, will only go nuclear if absolutely necessary, meaning if it is a matter of survival.  Israel would not need nuclear weapons to wipe out Iran’s nuclear program and is more likely to keep Iran in check with the threat of reprisal should Iran get nuclear weapons and use one of its proxies to attack Israel.

I left North Korea for last.  This was not an accident.  It is unquestionably the most dangerous of all the nuclear powers.  Besides the fact that their dictator Kim Jong has repeatedly threatened the U.S., it’s believed that North Korea helped fund the building of Hamas’s terror tunnels from Gaza to Israel.  No one finds it hard to believe that Kim would have a problem providing Hamas or any other terrorist organization with a nuclear weapon.  Like Hamas, Kim Jong’s Korea doesn’t care about his own people so he would have no problem contributing to a genocide of another people.  I have no doubt Israel is watching him very closely.

The terrorism scenario is always out there of course, be it a conventional bomb or dirty bomb,  especially since there are groups that have declared their willingness and desire to cause devastation in large western cities, most notably New York City.

All this is conjecture, but with all the conflicts going on today anything can happen at any time.  Let’s hope this doesn’t.

A Tribute to the Decent

Decent_Human_Being_for_DummiesKeep reading! I probably mean you.  After all, it’s  not that tough to make it into the category of the decent, and if you’re reading this you’ve most likely already increased the likelihood.  I was motivated to write this piece by a comment I received earlier today in response to my calling Henry Siegman a self-hating Jew.  I won’t use the person’s name but the comment was as follows:

“I block anyone who uses the term “self-hating Jew.” Are you a psychoanalyst? Or do you just use this term for anyone who isn’t sufficiently right-wing? In either case, bye-bye, you and your childish and thought-free discourse are blocked.”

Let me start by saying that I really don’t care if I’m blocked by this person or not, but felt like making my opinion very clear for those of you who read what I write, especially on a regular basis.

You do not have to be active to be a decent human being.  You do not even have to care.  Everyone’s personality and everyone’s life is different.  There are those who are too busy, too frightened, even too disinterested in what is going on to get involved.  That doesn’t mean you’re not a decent human being.  If you are Jewish and choose to do nothing, show no support and are not involved on any level, that does not make you a self-hating Jew.  There are so many reasons a person may not be involved in what is taking place in the world and I am not going to judge anyone for that.  It is not my place to do that.  However, if you are someone with enough importance to get on national television and the words you speak are against the Israeli government on a level that undermines it, I have a problem with you and most likely will see you as a self-hating Jew.  I’ll take it one step further.  If you want to criticize Israel and identify the areas where criticism is warranted, but still recognize the truth that Israel is fighting an enemy committed to its destruction and therefore must take action, I have no problem with that either.

Live your life, do your thing, and if your choice is to not be involved you can still very easily be a very decent human being.  Side with terrorists and I don’t have to be a psychoanalyst to know you have issues I want no part of, and if your voice is an influential one I WILL speak out against you.  As far of the rest of you are concerned, thanks for being decent human beings.

A Disgrace

HenrySiegmanThis post is more of a rant than an editorial, but seeing as I can hardly believe what I just heard I felt the need to do this.  No Henry Siegman, Israel is not the disgrace, you are.  No one is happy innocent civilians are being killed, but how dare you as a man ordained as an Orthodox Rabbi, portray yourself as a voice for the Jews.  You call on Israel to stop the killing as though they were the one’s who stopped it.  You call the U.S. hypocrites for not working with Hamas, the same organization killing the people you claim to be part of.  Would you have told the people in the Warsaw Ghetto to go easy on the Nazis too?  How come I never heard your name while Hamas and other Palestinian terrorists were blowing up Jewish families?  I guess you’ve taken your life experiences and come out a self-hating Jew. I can think of no other logical reason.  You’re a disgrace.

Today’s humanitarian:All Talk and no Action

article-2698331-1FCB64DE00000578-120_634x419As the world figuratively and in some places literally burns, where are all the humanitarians now?  I have never had a problem with those who have been upset with the deaths of civilians in Gaza, but it’s the rest of their behavior which reflects how disingenuous they often are.  A few weeks back I made mention of Pope Francis and how much I appreciated the way in which he discussed the events taking place in the world.  He pleaded to everyone fighting to stop fighting, practically crying to God in prayer. He has emphasized his concern over the last few days over the situation in Iraq, once again showing his understanding for what is happening in the world. Too many people however have taken a very different approach.

Gaza has been a popular cause.  One might even call the support for Gaza the latest fad, kind of like when Darfur was hot.  Once it was “Save Darfur”, now it’s “Free Gaza”.  People, some famous, many not famous, use these causes to show others and sometimes themselves, how good they are.  What caring people they are.  In reality they’re just followers lining up behind what they are hearing as important in the media without even knowing what is really happening on the ground.  Ask these same “Free Gaza” people, and I guarantee you they were many of the same “Save Darfur” people, what the situation in Darfur is today.  Ask them to name 2 cities in Gaza.  I’m very confident the answer to both would be the same, “I don’t know.”  Then ask them why they don’t open their mouth or protest the actions of ISIS and see what kind of response you get. I doubt it will be a very logical or intelligent one.  After all, Iraq isn’t a hot fad, at least not yet.

Its gets even worse with the high-profile people or agency workers or leaders.  Most likely the UN is busier investigating Israel for war crimes than it is addressing the humanitarian crisis and genocide taking place in Iraq.  Where are those who had so much to say about Gaza now?  Some of them are even Christians remaining silent to the horrors taking place against Christians.  For the athletes or entertainers that spoke out about Gaza, they are not much different from the sheep I referred to earlier.  For the agency heads and politicians that remain silent now, the behavior is nothing short of abhorrent and destroys any credibility they may have had.  Their neglect for their responsibilities not only doesn’t help the problem, it contributes to it by strengthening the resolve of the truly evil.  Whether or not it’s about money, politics or neglect, it’s clear that their humanitarianism in the end is a lot more talk than action.
