Wake up Holland

After yesterday’s events in Amsterdam, telling Holland to wake up is a natural and understandable reaction. But I could just as easily said, “Wake up world”, for what we saw take place in the city where my parents grew up, is going to happen everywhere in Europe, and beyond, including eventually America, if this problem isn’t addressed. While I like to believe the majority of Muslims are not a problem, let’s call this what it is, a Muslim problem. Maybe more importantly, we should learn from history and identify the parallels of what we are seeing in Europe today to what we saw in Europe in the 1930s.

While we might be inclined to say that this is different because it is not government sanctioned, that is not entirely accurate. After the Islamic revolution of 1979 in Iran, it was made very clear that the goal was to make the entire world Muslim. Much of Holland’s Muslim population is of Moroccan descent, an important point to make when addressing the issue. Morocco traditionally has been a country welcoming to Jews. When Jews left Morocco for Israel in the first large migration of Jews from North Africa, the Royal family practically begged them to stay. But with the tentacles of Iran spreading everywhere, and using the Palestinian issue as there moral high ground, they have spread their evil rhetoric worldwide. That coupled with the funding of Qatar and others has fueled this rise in Muslim fundamentalism, And of course, just as was the case with Nazi Germany, while there ultimate goal is world domination, their favorite target is the Jews.

For those who throw around the terms “Nazis” and “fascists”, if you truly want to see an example of that today, just YouTube yesterday’s events in Amsterdam, events eerily reminiscent of Kristallnacht, which took place 86 years ago tomorrow. My fellow Jews need to call to task all of those who stay quiet when the Jewish people, .02% of the world’s population, are treated as though they are the problem and are targeted and attacked just because they are Jewish. We must not remain silent and we must not be afraid to speak the truth, regardless of who it offends or angers.

As for not only Holland, the country not just of my ancestors but my immediate family, but the rest of Europe and countries beyond, if you do not wake up, your governments will ultimately fall and you will enter an age of terror not seen since the 1940s. I like to believe that it is not too late, and in all honesty I just don’t know, but what I do know is that the only chance we have is in identifying and dealing with the real threat, not whatever scapegoat is easier to target and makes us feel better about ourselves.

Wake up Holland, before it is too late.

My message to the Jew Haters of the world

Dear Jew Haters,

You know who you are. You masquerade as humanitarians, social justice warriors, educators and public servants. Some of you whose job is to act or make music think that you have a better understanding of right and wrong than the rest of us. You opine and preach about how much you care about your fellow man and the injustices committed against women and children but pick and choose which women and children to protect. You are ignorant hypocrites at best, evil servants of the devil at worst. Your shortsightedness blinds you from seeing how on the wrong side of history your stances have placed you. But you will not come out ahead, and this is why.

You are merely an insignificant speck of dust in the global scheme. You have made the choice to pick the chosen people as the target of your hatred. Last year in Israel, on the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, the holiday coinciding with October 7th in the Gregorian calendar, you watched and learned of a massacre unparalleled in recent history. One would have thought that your credibility would have been unquestioned after learning of 1200 people being slaughtered, babies being purposely murdered, and young women being raped. But rather than seeing this as the horror that it was, your hatred of the Jewish people combined in many cases with personal financial gain, caused you to support the perpetrator, and chastise the victim. You jumped at the opportunity to attack Israel for protecting its people and conveniently ignored the acts of terror committed against them, in favor of those who committed or supported these atrocities. And you did this for one reason above all others. You hate the Jewish people.

Jews have been persecuted, expelled and murdered more than any other people throughout history. Empires and mighty nations have found themselves obsessed with our very existence. They have made their attacks on Jews more than just a policy, they have made it a priority. You feebleminded, hypocritical, self-serving pieces of garbage have spent the last year criticizing every action Israel has taken in the name of their safety and that of the Jewish people. You have chosen to ignore the restraint Israel has shown, the caution it has taken, and the well thought out methods it has chosen to prosecute a war they did not start. You refuse to admit that there is not another country on the planet that would have shown the mercy Israel has shown over this past year.

But when all is said and done, you will lose. This is not a warning or a threat. This is very simply a reference to the past and an understanding of reality. Before so many evil nations or empires crumbled, one of the last things they did was persecute, expel, or kill their Jewish population. The Spanish Inquisition, Russian pogroms and Nazi Germany all lead to defeat of evil governments, to a large part because they were consumed by their hatred for the Jews, but to an even greater part because they picked the wrong people to mess with. They may have had the power and military might to inflict devastation on Jewish communities, but ultimately they could not and never would have overcome the spiritual power of the Jewish people. That is why, and read this carefully all you determined to see us wiped off the planet, they are gone and we remain standing.

So to all of you Jew haters who are ignoring history, know this. No one has been able to extinguish our light till now, and no one ever will. You are on the wrong side of history, a side that sees darkness, chaos, death and destruction, every thing the Jewish people are not. If you choose to remain on that wrong side of history, your world will ultimately crumble around you like so many worlds before you.

I have never been more proud or more happy to be a Jew than I am today. In the past year the Jewish people have rallied militarily, thanks to the amazing IDF, financially, thanks to donors both large and small, and last, but not least, spiritually. The prayers of Jew and non-Jew alike for the safety and continued existence of the Jewish people has never been stronger. So to those of you who still choose to hate us, do so at your own peril, because ultimately it will be your demise, not ours.

May God Bless the souls of those murdered last Simchat Torah, October 7th, and all the amazingly heroic members of the IDF who have made the ultimate sacrifice. And may strength and peace be the blessing bestowed on all those who have suffered pain and anguish from the events of a year ago. This year on Simchat Torah, while the Jew haters will drown in their evil desires, we will dance for all those who can not, and for all those whose souls we hope to uplift. That is how we as Jews spend our time. You might want to learn from that.

Sincerely and proudly,

David Groen

The light that shines through the darkness

There are 2 impending anniversaries that weigh heavy on the hearts of Jews across the world.  One is today October 7th, and the other is October 24th.  A year ago, October 7th coincided with the celebration of the holiday of Simchat Torah in the State of Israel.  As we know, the events of that day were devastating.  This year October 24th is the day that coincides with Simchat Torah in Israel.  The mention of these 2 days is important and relevant in the discussion when we not only look back, but maybe more importantly, we look forward.

Remembering is part of the core values for every Jew with any degree of connection to the faith.  As Jews, we remember because we mourn, we remember because we honor, but maybe most importantly, we remember because we have no choice.  The joy of being Jewish goes hand in hand with the burden of being persecuted, often hunted, and far too often in history, expelled or killed.  And yet what might very well be the most amazing thing about our people, is that while empires have crumbled around us, often shortly after they came after us, we have endured for centuries. If we do not remember, we risk not seeing the signs of impending doom, and ultimate preventing devastation striking within our midst all over again.  On the surface it seems ominous and gloomy.  So why is it that I have never been more happy or proud to be Jewish than any other time in my life?

Last year on Simchat Torah in my synagogue here in America, we celebrated the holiday knowing part of what had taken place the day before in Israel.  Most of us were either deeply saddened, angrier than ever before, or both.  And yet in following the leadership, we danced.  We did so with heavy hearts, and at least speaking for myself I can say, I forced myself to do so, but we did so, nonetheless.  At that moment I not only did not know the reason why it was important, I had very little desire to do so whatsoever.  However, when I look back, and think of the months that followed, and the recovery of our collective psyche, I realize that reacting in one way above all, a Jewish way, was the one thing that would restore our optimism, and for those who may have lost it, our faith.

It is my belief that the root cause of anti-Semitism is the fact that as the Chosen People, Jews are the light of the world.  This by no means that every Jew is good, and it certainly does not mean that you have be Jewish to be good, but it means that the light that brightens and strengthens mankind, emanates from the Jewish people.  Those who wish to share in the light are welcome, and subsequently live in peace and friendship with Jews around the world. Those who do not wish to share in this light are mired in darkness.  A darkness that breeds hate, violence and destruction. It would explain why the empires that have fallen have done so without wiping the Jewish people off the planet.  Simply put, you can diminish the light to some degree, but when all is said and done, nothing can distinguish the flame that was lit by the Almighty.

So, this year when October 7th arrives, it might be most appropriate to remember with solemnity the horrors and tragedies that took place on that day, and then, 17 days later, when Simchat Torah falls, to celebrate with hope and promise. “Simchat Torah” is the “Joy of the Torah”, and it is meant to be celebrated with happiness and enthusiasm.  We see our brave soldiers as fighting and sacrificing for all the Jewish people around the world, and we have faith in their ultimate victory.  It will be our job to fight and win the spiritual battle.  By praying and atoning on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, and celebrating on Simchat Torah, we do our part in ensuring the enemy never achieves its goal of wiping us out.  We do our part in keeping that flame lit and using our light to illuminate the world.

Wishing all of you a good and sweet year.

Free Palestine you say?

So you say you want Palestine to be free, do you? Ask yourself what that means. See if you can come up with an answer other than the packaged lines being fed to you. Let me guess. “Israel’s committing genocide”. “The Israelis are occupiers and colonizers”. “Israel targets babies”. “Israel is an Apartheid State”. And of course this week number 1 hit on the charts, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. Having fun marching in the streets? Found something to be part of have you? You might be in for a surprise. That’s if you even have the intellectual capacity to realize it when it happens. That’s if you are even smart enough to know what the term intellectual capacity means.

If this sounds like you are being ridiculed, that’s English for being made fun of, maybe you are not completely mindless. But if you are part of the group of people doing this in a Harvard or Penn, you certainly are nowhere close to as smart as you think you are. Your “cause” is actually calling for a true genocide. You are marching in support of a group that is calling for the death of 16 million Jews. For those who march but know nothing, which I suppose is most of you, 16 million Jews is not the number of Jews in Gaza, there are actually none(unless you count the Israeli military taking out the trash). It’s not even the amount of Jews in Israel. There are a little over 7 million Jews in what your puppet masters refer to as occupied land. 16 million Jews is actually the number of Jews on the planet. That is the number of people the group you are supporting wants to see killed.

Trying to debunk your logic, that is English for showing you why you are full of crap, would be a waste of time. You hear a lie once or twice, maybe it takes three times, and you decide it to be true. You make no effort to verify it-doubt you’ll even find the word verify on Tiktok-make no effort to determine if what you are marching for is harmful, and you have no concern for the consequences for yourself, let alone others. To say you are stupid is insulting to stupid.

So let me help you make some sense of it all.

“Israel’s committing genocide”. In a genocide the population becomes less. The population of Gaza has consistently increased (that means gotten bigger).

“The Israelis are occupiers and colonizers”. There were no Israelis in Gaza till Hamas invited us in to wipe them off the face of the earth.

“Israel targets babies”. Israel warns families with babies to get out of the way but Hamas doesn’t let them.

“Israel is an Apartheid State” You have no clue what Apartheid is anyway so why bother.

From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. As far as this one is concerned, if you can name the river or the sea, we’ll talk then. But I’m not worried.

While your behavior deserves this mockery, it is also pitiful and scary. In gravitating to an evil, cause just because that cause sees you as fresh meat and sucks you in, is all it takes to make you part of something, you either have a life of misery or come from a sad and pathetic past, and for this I pity you. But looking at your numbers is the scary part, not just because you are attacking me as a Jew, but because of what it bodes for the history of the planet. And as far as the consequences are concerned, if what the people you are marching for and for whom you are tearing down the pictures of babies being held hostage for, ultimately get what they want, I suspect they will give you 2 choices. Become one of them or die. But hey, your friends are doing it, so why not?

Husna Ali’s Diary: circa 2020

The following is what a diary of a 16-year-old girl in Michigan might end up looking like in the year 2020. It’s a frightening testament to where the world may be going and reflects what so many think is the ambition of Muslim extremists.

Kora.0

I had a very busy day today. I finished my last final in school and then did more to prepare to go to my summer camp. I am very grateful that my father will let me go. He said I was good with my teachers and that he would let me go because when I get back he will have me meet my future husband and prepare to be a wife and mother.

I asked my father if we would be all be going to spend the weekend in New Mecca but he said that the hotels in Manhattan Island were too expensive in the summer and that it would be better if we go in the winter when the snow is there and the pre-Ramadan sales are happening.

Last year we went to the Islamic Republic of France for summer vacation and that was nice. I remember the time we spent in Chirac City. The Eiffel Tower was so lovely. I want to go again.

I made some new friends on the internet. There was one boy who seemed very nice but I did not talk too long. I do not want to say something wrong and put my parents in danger. I remember last year when Sumeka’s father had to spend one month in jail because she said something about sex on the internet. I don’t want to do that to my father. He is a good man and he lets my mother have friends and even read modern books. I hope he will find me a good man like him.

It is much easier now to find good people in our world since the great new age. My parents had to live through the evil times when the Zionists controlled our country and made everyone do what they wanted for the corrupt government they had in Palestine. Now, praised be Allah, we are all one people and live as decent people.

I don’t understand how anyone ever enjoyed the immoral movies and music we once had here. Now it is much better. We have movies about how our heroes who changed the world and bought the revolution that freed us from the slavery of desire and ambition. Now we are all one and the world is filled with men and women who know their place and all desire to be worshippers of Allah.

I am excited about summer camp. It is near the nation’s capital in Nasrallah, Michigan and will allow us to learn much and learn more about how to behave as good wives and mothers. I will try to write more later but now I must pray and then clean my brothers’ room.

Free the State Department!

john-kerry-has-been-pushing-for-air-strikes-in-syriaTo quote a statement from Times of Israel,  “Washington is fuming over the negative Israeli response to the ceasefire proposal drafted with Qatar and Turkey.”  But after the report came out that the cease-fire offer was basically an offer for Hamas to stop fighting if Israel gives in to all their demands, Secretary of State John Kerry claims he never formally offered this particular cease-fire to Israel.  Kerry claiming he never officially proposed this cease-fire, one that might as well have been drafted by Hamas, is no different from celebrities like Rihanna or Dwight Howard Tweeting “Free Palestine” only to delete the tweet later.  Once you put it out there guys, we all know how you feel.

How the Oscars Helped Show the BDS Movement’s Lack of Credibility

Omar_poster_croppedBy now I know I was not alone in cringing when a film from Palestine was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Film category.  My personal discomfort wasn’t out of any objection that a film was made in the Palestinian territory, but rather for my immediate nervousness at the prospect of an acceptance speech.  When I thought about it further however, I was actually quite pleased by the nomination.  Not so much because I feel any personal investment in the growth of the Palestinian film industry, but rather because of the damage it does to the argument made by the BDS (Boycott Divestment and Sanctions) Movement.

The movement, one that has influenced wealthy corporations and high-profile entertainers to boycott Israel, pushes the agenda that Israel is an apartheid state where Palestinians are persecuted with no hope for any sort of future.  Along comes a movie, “Omar”, a movie that tells a story of a young Palestinian man accused of being an accomplice in the murder of an Israeli soldier.  In the movie the man is beaten by an Israeli interrogator and convinced to collaborate with Israeli intelligence.  Having not seen the movie I can not speak to how good or bad it makes the Israeli authorities look, but I do know that in an apartheid state a film of this sensitive nature would never have been made.  This movie was made in Nazareth, in what is territory ultimately under control of the Israeli government.  It is hard to imagine a film like this would even get off the ground in China or Russia if a filmmaker from one of those countries showed either of those governments in a similar light.  So when the nomination of this film was read out loud for the entire world to hear, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences was making the statement for those who needed to hear it that Israel is not only NOT an apartheid state, but a country where people can express themselves freely, be they Arab or Jew.

I don’t expect the anti-Semites who mold the BDS Movement to their agenda to be influenced by this at all, but I am hoping that the message was loud and clear to anyone out there who is objective and maybe not as educated to the reality of the situation.  For this I would like to thank the Academy.

Why We Pick Sides

Although the events in the Middle East are of a more serious nature, this is not the first time in the past month we have been witness to two large groups of people taking sides against each other.  Only a few weeks ago when Barack Obama won reelection, the ongoing battle between Republicans on the right and Democrats on the left, at least to some extent, finally settled down. Although the differences between the American presidential election and the conflict in Israel and Gaza are significant, one interesting similarity is that in both circumstances all parties think the same thing.  They think they are without any question correct for choosing the side that they did.  The question this makes me ask is this.  What causes people to pick sides?

I discussed this with someone prior to the election, and we both agreed that there are many people out there who pick a political party based on what they were born into.  It is not uncommon to see three generations of Democrats or Republicans.  After all, it is very normal for parents to influence their children.  By no means do I mean to imply these people are not thinking for themselves, after all, being born to parents who always voted Democrat, I too fell into this category.  I just know that my political opinions were influenced by the discussions I heard and participated in at home and that my opinion was, at least partially, molded by those dinner time chats.   Now don’t think for one second I don’t recognize there are multitudes of people who make their decision when they reach adulthood based on experiences or analysis, but it is important to recognize that there are many people who in some ways never really had a choice to make.  It’s all they ever knew from a young age.

Although the stakes, certainly immediately are far greater, there are similarities to be found between the U.S. presidential election and the conflict in the Middle East.  The similarities I speak of surround the taking of sides, the reasons for doing so, and the certainty with which each side holds its view.  Although there is great passion in American politics, the majority of people realize that each side isn’t entrenched to the point where no one can see how it will ever change.  I am not so sure the same can be said for the situation in the Middle East.

Examining the situation in Gaza, I asked myself what makes someone choose one side or another.  There are of course the people who live in the affected areas, and then there are people such as myself who live geographically far away, but feel close to the situation.  I’ve heard the stories of Palestinians who in their early years saw people who they were close to die, and living in an environment where they never heard anything other than the fact that the Israelis were responsible, grew up wanting revenge.  Regardless of the accuracy of the information, was there ever a question what side they would be on?   Were they ever given a choice?

In Israel, boys and girls know that when they reach the ripe old age of 18, that they will get called up to do their required military service. Military service made necessary from living in a nation surrounded by enemies.  Then there are the thousands who have been killed in terrorist attacks and their families who have been directly affected by these attacks.  Even if for argument’s sake Israel’s attack on Gaza held no justification, what side would you expect these people to be on?  Past incidents give them little to no room for choice.

There are people on both sides of the conflict who pick a side based on their background, religion, or in some cases, political expediency.  In some cases people pick sides without any genuine regard for the well-being of the people on the side that they pick.  Some politicians and journalists thrust their careers into high gear during conflicts such as these, and although I am sure that for the most part these people are not looking to see anyone suffer, in some cases they are not exactly praying for things to get back to normal either.

It’s very important to mention that the media that supplies the information to a large percentage of Israel’s enemies makes no attempt at being balanced and in many cases is controlled by their governments that do not believe in the concept of freedom of speech or freedom of the press.  Israel is a democracy with these freedoms and with an open channel to get information from all sides.  All of these factors play a major role in how the people on both sides think and implies that people’s feelings are controlled by factors entirely out of their control.  A point I have no intention of disputing.  All of this leads me to how I picked the side I am on.

I am a Jewish man and the son of Holocaust survivors from Holland.  I’ve always believed I was created by God and by my mother and father.  However I recently came to the realization that there is one other player, for lack of a better term, in forming who I am as a person.  That player is the anti-Semite.  From a young age I was aware of the suffering of the Jewish people.  After 6 million Jews were murdered by Hitler’s Nazi Germany, many surviving Jews went back to their biblical home in what was then Palestine.  It did not take long for the surrounding Arab nations to begin hostilities against the newly formed modern nation of Israel in 1948, and subsequently have major wars in 1956, 1967, and 1973.  These conflicts began prior to Israel having any control of Gaza or Judaea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank.  Gaza and the Sinai Desert were Egyptian territories taken over by Israel during a war and the West Bank was Jordanian and was also taken over by Israel.  Particularly regarding the latter, Jordan was more than happy to be rid of what they saw as a problematic population.  In the 70s, when Yasser Arafat’s PLO developed a new strategy, the strategy of terrorism, a new era began in the Middle East, and once again a political organization found it justified to kill Jewish people at random.  Arafat’s Palestinian “cause” had him embezzle funds and keep his people down and impoverished.  After all, should the Palestinians prosper he would have no basis of leadership, being that the leadership was based on hating the Jewish, I mean Zionist enemy.  The Palestinian Authority, an organization now recognized by the world as being legitimate, is the political offshoot of Arafat’s PLO and is now considered the more moderate voice of the Palestinians. This is because Hamas, now running the show in Gaza, justifies terrorism as a political means to achieving their goal.

Seeing innocent people crying and bleeding as a result of Israeli airstrikes is never a pleasant sight, but it pales in comparison to suicide bombers going into Pizza places and wiping out entire families intentionally with one bomb.  A car on fire in Gaza because it was near a terrorist base of operation, does not compare with buses being blown up intentionally.  And civilian Palestinians are not targeted in European countries, while Jews are fair game in places like France and Bulgaria to mention just a few.  And when Ahmadinejad of Iran speaks, I once again hear a leader of a nation speak openly about wanting to murder millions of Jews.

I see the enemies of Israel accuse the Jewish state of not wanting peace with the Palestinians.  To this I ask; “if you are so convinced of this, why are you not willing to give it a try?”   I see the answer is being a simple one.  Even if the people would want peace, their leadership does not.  And for this reason I believe that they are not only out to kill as many Jews as possible, but that they are responsible for dying Palestinian civilians in Gaza as well.  How did I pick my side?  I had no choice.  I put a value on human life.
