Do we forgive Germany?

It goes without saying that there is no forgiving Hitler’s Nazi Germany for the atrocities they committed against mankind.  At one point in writing the book “Jew Face” I went to the library and took out 3 books about Auschwitz and other concentration and death camps.  I did this in order to get an even stronger awareness of what took place so that in my writing I would give the proper respect and attention to the Holocaust perpetuated on the Jewish people.  Even though the book does not focus on this aspect, I believe I accomplished that goal.

The question I present is this. Do we forgive Germany today?  Today’s modern Germany is progressive, tolerant, and in many ways more friendly with Israel and the Jewish people than many other nations.  I have not been there, but it has been told to me by many that this generation is not only accepting but apologetic and that they do not hide or avoid the truth.  Nevertheless, the horrors committed by this one nation were so great that an argument can be made that forgiveness is never in order.  I would love to know what you think, but for those who wish to respond without a comment I am adding a poll.

Publisher’s review of “Jew Face”

The following is a review of the book Jew Face written by the publisher of the book around the time of Holocaust Remembrance Day.  Although the day has passed, since it is appropriate to remember the Holocaust on any day, I am posting this now.  This review gives another account of the book.  I look forward to hearing more reviews and opinions on the book.

The Physical Appearance of a Jew was Often Obvious and Very Distinctive: David Groen

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum will lead the country in commemorating Days of Remembrance this week. This year’s theme is Choosing to Act: Stories of Rescue. AuthorHouse has chosen to act by recording and preserving survivor legacies for future generations so nothing like the Holocaust ever happens again. AuthorHouse features a survivor’s story every day this week.

David Groen is the fourth of our featured AuthorHouse authors during National Holocaust Remembrance Week. He has lovingly recorded his parents’, Nardus and Sipora Groen’s, story as a legacy for future generations in his book, Jew Face.

David Groen is Nardus and Sipora’s youngest child. He has finally realized his passion of sharing and immortalizing his parents’ love story; a love story that survived seemingly insurmountable odds. He combines this passion with his extensive knowledge of Jewish history, his parents’ stories and facts and information gathered from interviews with numerous subjects included in the book. Add his own, unique storytelling style and Groen has created an “important documentation of critical historical events.”

Groen’s parents’ story takes place in Nazi occupied Holland, where “only a small percentage of Dutch Jews survived the systematic annihilation.” His father rebelled against his country’s invaders as a part of the resistance while his mother was forced to “exhibit an almost unimaginable courage” in escaping detection by the Nazis due to her “innocent beauty and Jewish-looking face.”

“Together, and with the help of many special people, including a couple whose righteousness reached the highest level one can imagine, they have lived to tell their story.” And AuthorHouse thanks David Groen for recording that story as his parents’ testimony and lesson to future generations to never let anything like the Holocaust ever happen again.

Bevrijdingsdag-Dutch Liberation Day:The Liberation of Amsterdam and a personal Thanks

In what would seem to be the most appropriate post to end the weekend tribute to Bevrijdinsdag, Dutch Liberation Day, I offer this video of the Liberation of Amsterdam.  Although the harsh realities of what took place during these 5 years of Nazi occupation would soon come to light for those who had survived, on this day the good people of Holland had every right to celebrate.  And that they did.  As the Jews of Holland would learn of the devastation that had struck their world, those left in Holland, such as Sipora Groen, my mother and the woman on the cover of the book Jew Face, would at least be able to try to rebuild in what was now a free and always had been a friendly Holland.  It is for this reason I take this opportunity to say on a personal note that although I am very proud of my Jewish roots, I am also very proud of my Dutch ones.  Thank you Holland and thank you to all of the Dutch people for doing whatever you could to turn tragedy into hope.  No nation deserved freedom more on that day and it has been my honor to celebrate it.

Bevrijdingsdag:Dutch Liberation Day-The Liberation of Zutphen

The following 2 videos showing the Liberation of Zutphen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland, in 1945,  were put together by Harm Kuijper, who happens to be the son-in-law of Lubertus and Geeske te Kiefte, two of the main characters and heroes in the book Jew Face.

Bevrijdingsdag:Dutch Liberation Day-The te Kieftes

In commemorating Bevrijdingsdag, Dutch Liberation Day, we do so in 2 ways.  We do so on a large scale, realizing that today is the day set out to celebrate the freedom from the occupation of the Nazi regime, and we do so on a smaller scale, remembering those and the family of those that helped give freedom on a more specific, but no less significant scale.  With that in mind I focus in this post on the family te Kiefte.  In the book “Jew Face” much is told of the heroics of Lubertus & Geeske te Kiefte.  When  we first meet them in the book they had a young son Gerrit, and by the time the story is told they have a baby daughter named Aantje.  Regretfully all four have passed from this earth.  Gerrit, who was just a young boy during the second World War, died suddenly and tragically in 1968.  Antje was taken by cancer early in 2010.  Bertus te Kiefte lived to be 81 and left this earth in 1990, and Geeske te Kiefte died in 2003 at the age of 90. (Pictures:Left-Bertus and Geeske te Kiefte with son Gerrit in 1943: Right:Sipora Groen holding Aantje in 1945)

As stated so often, in so many ways and in so many places, the te Keiftes and their descendants have stayed close to the Groen family and their descendants.  Both Gerrit and Aantje are survived by their spouses and offspring, and Bertus and Geeske have their one surviving daughter Nina with her husband Harm and their children.  Harm honors the Normandy Veterans’ Association on his website http://nvafriends.nl/index.php?cid=11

Understanding the more personal  stories of heroics helps us to relate to the enormity of the liberation.  We thank all of those who made is possible.

Book Review on Dutch website for Bevrijdingsdag-Dutch Liberation Day

In honor of Bevrijdingsdag, Dutch Liberation Day, you can read the following book review in the Dutch online site FOK.nl.  The site provides English translation when opened on Google Chrome.

Bevrijdingsdag-Dutch Liberation Day: Lemerlerveld

The small Dutch town of Lemerlerveld was an important location for the Dutch resistance during the second World War.  The courage and kindness of the citizens of this town is a symbol of what made the people of Holland great in the midst of some of the greatest evil the world has ever known.  On this Bevrijdingsdag, Dutch Liberation Day, we honor this small town and all the good it did for so many people, including my parents, Nardus and Sipora Groen as chronicled in the book Jew Face.

Dutch Liberation Day:Audrey Hepburn’s connection to the Dutch resistance

As if her adorable beauty and charming acting skills weren’t enough, it turns out there are even greater reasons to be a fan of the late Audrey Hepburn.  Living in the Netherlands during the war, Hepburn would perform underground to raise money for the Dutch resistance and on occasion even help by being a courier .  And showing her understanding of the human condition, she would later in her life recall the horrors of what she saw and in retrospect remembered as a young girl with this statement: “I have memories. More than once I was at the station seeing trainloads of Jews being transported, seeing all these faces over the top of the wagon. I remember, very sharply, one little boy standing with his parents on the platform, very pale, very blond, wearing a coat that was much too big for him, and he stepped on to the train. I was a child observing a child.”
